ASA HESS, a worthy pioneer settler of Parke county was born in Hamilton county, Ohio June 29th 1833, departed this life, January 16th1908. Aged 74 years 6 months and 17 days. He came to Reserve Township this county with his parents John and Elinor (Runion) Hess in 1835, he being about 2 years of age. They made the trip in a covered wagon with a four horse team and located on the farm where the deceased lived until about six years ago when he sold the old home place and made his home with his nephew Branson Demotte who with his wife have been untiring in their efforts to make him comfortable in his declining days. He was married to Mary Millikan February 6th 1862. She being a faithful companion and a worthy helpmate until her death March 1st 1904. Both uncle Asa “as he was familiarly called” and his wife were devoted members of the United Brethern church at Fairview. Brother Hess had been very feeble the last few years, there being times when his life was despaired of, but his last sickness was not thought serious until a few minutes before his death came when he asked to be turned on his side and before he could be laid down the death angel had entered, and the spirit of uncle Asa had taken its flight. Blessed are they who die in the Lord, Yea saith my spirit though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, For thou are with me. Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. The funeral was conducted by Rev. A. J. Marshall and the remains were laid beside his beloved wife in the Montezuma cemetery. – thanks muches to S for typing this
