SARAH FRANCIS HELMS, only daughter of James and Lucinda Helms, was born at Chambersville, Ind., Jan. 4, 1843, departed this life Sept. 15, 1915; at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 11 days. She was united in marriage to Henry TEEGARDEN in 1858. To this union five children were born, namely, Susan, Loda, Dempsey, Louisa and James. The three older ones preceeded their mother in death. In the year 1877 she was again united in marriage to Tobias ALWARD and to this union four children were born, John, Ira, Frank and Lucinda, the latter dying in infancy. In 1884 she was again united in marriage to John HATHAWAY, now deceased. She leaves five children, sixteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren to mourn their loss, which they feel is her eternal gain. She united with the Christian church at No. 7 school house while in the days of her youth. She spent the remaining years of her life adjoining fields to the old school house where she was converted and gave her heart to God.
She loved music and on last Sunday requested her daughter to “sing her to sleep,” and the first song she wanted was “Rock of Ages.” She had been in ill health almost a year, but was taken to her bed about six weeks ago with that dreaded disease, cancer of the stomach. Though she suffered untold agony, she bore her sufferings with a true Christian spirit. But now, her sufferings are o’er and her spirit has taken its flight to the God who gave it. Funeral services were held at eleven o’clock at Coopers Chapel by Lillie G. Allen assisted by Mrs. Mary Crowder and interment in the Cooper cemetery.
