Luella Miller Helms was the second child of six children born to the union of Thomas and Ann Morehouse Miller. She was born in the Carpenter community northeast of Veedersburg in Fountain County, Indiana on the 30th day of November, 1869 and it was in that community that she spent her youth and started her education, at a time when the completion of the 8th grade or primary school was the usual span of education by attending the school of that community known then as the "Get Away School," attending with her young friends and life acquaintances, Monroe and Dan Carpenter and others. This area referred to would be known to the younger folks as the Milt Petit farm area, which at this time is often historically referred to us as a pioneer area of this community and it was in this area that Luella spent her young adult life and became associated the church, which gave her a Christian background and made for the church to which she was faithful throughout a long life.
She united with New Light Christian Church in her early life later placing her Church membership at Veedersburg EUB with Mr. Helms. It was on April 23rd in 1893 at the age of 23, that Luella Miller Helms was united in marriage with Edward R. Helms in a double wedding with intimate friends, David and Anna Wertz Rosenbarger at Veedersburg, Ind. Soon after their marriage, the young married life took them to the Brazil, Indiana community and it was here that they were blessed with their only child, a daughter. About the turn of the century, Ed and Ell Helms, as they were most affectionately known to their friends came to the Sterling community of Veedersburg from Brazil. It was in Sterling in 1903, Mr. Helms built the Helms home and they made their life together there and she has, since Mr. Helm's passing at 83 years on Aug 11, 1951, continued to live there the past 55 years.
Mrs. Helms faithfulness to the church is best demonstrated by her loyalty for throughout her lifetime she was faithful and active in her church work and obligation and at an interval in her life she served continuously for five years as the treasurer of the Ladies Aid Society and was ever active until her health forced her into a life of less activity. Mrs. Helms became ill in the last six months and serious illness came to her in the week just preceding her death which occurred at 8:45 p.m. on Monday evening, Feb 10, 1958.
