Covington - Lyle D. Hegg, 86, of 1118 Liberty St, Covington a three-time mayor of the community died at 10:23 p.m. Sunday in Covington Manor Nursing Home wher ehe had been a patient for 13 months. He had been in ill health several years. Mr. Hegg first served as mayor Covington 1930-34, then again 1939-42 and the last time 1952-63. He was a bridge and building contractor until WWII when he was a Lt. in the Pacific with the Seabees. He was discharged with the rank of Lt. Colonel. After the war he was proprietor of LD Hegg Lumber & Construction Co until 1977 when he retired. He had bred and shown Belgium horses for many years. He was a former director of Citizens National Life Insurance Co, a member of the First United Methodist Church a 50-year-member of both Fountain Lodge 60 F&AM and Title Lodge 36 K of P. Mr. Hegg attended Covington schools. Born Feb 22, 1892, at Covington, he was a son of William Tell and Nora Harris Hegg. He was first married to Maude Z. Martin Dec 31, 1916. She died Nov 20, 1944. He then married Marguerite Phelps Rinn in 1945. She died June 5, 1970. Surviving are a son, Bill S of South Bend; a daughter, Mrs. Sam (Jean) McGurk of Rochester; a sister, Mrs. Lera Kauffmann of Champaign, Ill; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday ni Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home with Rev. Robert H. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. The family will receive callers at the funral home 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. that day.
