Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Nancy) Bookwalter of Lafayette and Mrs. WIlliam (Connie Hayes) Ganson of Otterbein; a son, Edward L., Hayes of Alexandria, Va; two stepsons, Jim Wolfe and Sam Wolfe, both of Lafayette; two stepdaughters, Mary Riner of Florida and Judith Banter of Lafayette; three sisters, Mrs. Olive Steele of Crawfordsville; Mrs. James (Maxine) Davis of Colfax; Mrs. Robert (Audrey) Coffin of Coatsville; two brothers, Floyd E. Hayes and Robert R. Hayes, both of Lafayette; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Elvis L. Hayes, 79, of 1414 S. Washington St, Lafayette died at 2:34 a.m. Saturday Dec 2, 1995 in Home Hospital Mr. Hayes worked in the tool and die department at Fairfield Manufacuring Co from 1941 until retiring in 1979. Born in Darlington on April 10, 1916, he attended Crawfordsville schools and moved to Lafayette in 1943. He married Dorothy Wolfe on Oct 29, 1988. She survives.
Mr. Hayes served six years with the US Army National Guard in the 139th Field Artillery, 38th DIvision, Battery B.
He was a member of Hope Chapel Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge 492, Senior Citizens Kitchen Band and the YMA and a former member of Moose Lodge 1529, Legion of the Moose, Eagles Lodge 347, Boy Scouts of America, serving as a commissioner and a sustaing member and also a past member of Scout Honor Society Order of the Arrow and a Wea District commissioner.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. Visitation was Monday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Funeral Home with Masonic Lodge 492 service. Funeral service on Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Interment at Rest Haven Memorial Park.
