MELLOTT – Mrs. Alta V. Hayes, lifelong resident of Fountain County, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette. Mrs. Hayes, 87, had been in declining health for over a year. For the last seven years, she lived with a niece, Mrs. Ferman (LaVera) Rice of the Mellott community. Other survivors include four nephews. Born on Sept. 27, 1881, she was the daughter of Samuel and Americus Abolt Rice. The deceased was a resident of the Mellott-Newtown area all her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert C. Hayes, in 1955. Mrs. Hayes was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church near Newtown. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hopewell church with Rev. George Phelps in charge. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the rites. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the Crumley-Williams Funeral Home at Hillsboro. Burial will be in the Newtown Baptist Cemetery. – jlr
