Source: Dexter Kansas Tribune Thu 22 Feb 1906 p 1

FM Hathaway quietly passed away at his home in Dexter, Kansas Feb 17, 1906 at 8:30 p.m.  He was born in Fountain County, Indiana Nov 4, 1842; removed to Cowley County, Kansas in 1883 where he lived till the time of his death. When his country needed him he responded to the call, enlisting in Co E 63d regiment, Indiana volunteer infantry where he served three years. The deceased leaves two sons and four daughters to mourn his departure. All except two were at his bedside when he passed away.  Funeral services were held at the ME Church on Sunday Feb 18 at 3 o’clock p.m. conducted by Rev. Payton. The church was filled to its utmost capacity with friends who came to pay their respects to the departed one. The coffin was draped with the flag for which the one who slumbered beneath its folds had fought and conspicuous among those assembled were a number of old soldiers – a silent lesson of patriotism to the younger generation.  Kind friends had decorated the church with beautiful plants. After the services the remains were taken to the cemetery, followed by a large concourse of friends and laid to rest beside his wife who preceded him to the better land five years ago. The children of the deceased desire to thank all those who gave assistance and comfort during his last illness; also the choir that rendered beautiful selections at the funeral services.
