ATTICA — Miss Bernice M. Hartz, age 73, of Attica, died at the Community Hospital in Williamsport at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, where she had been a patient one day. She had been ill three months. Miss Hartz was born on a farm near Judyville in Warren County Sept. 16, 1895, the daughter of Alonzo and Elizabeth Kelly Hartz. She was graduated from Indiana University Medical Center and had taken her nursing training at City Hospital in Indianapolis. She served in the nursing corps during World War II in Honolulu and received her discharge from Ft. Harrison following the war. She was a nurse at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, superintendent of nurses and administrator of the hospital at Crisfield, Md., and later was supervisor of the General Hospital, formerly known as Robert Long in Indianapolis. She retired after 40 years of nursing. Miss Hartz was a graduate of Attica High School, a member of the Attica United Methodist Church and was a 50-year member of the Jordan Chapter 242, Order of Eastern Star at Hedrick. Survivors include: a cousin, Mrs. Inez McDermond of Attica, with whom she resided the past 10 years; a nephew, Jay Earl Hartz of Hoopeston, Ill., and a niece, Geraldine Marie Phillips of Salt Lake City, Utah. Several other nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Hartz, March 31, 1968. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church at Attica. The Rev. Harold Bachert officiated and burial, with the DeSutter Funeral Home in charge, was in Hillside Cemetery at Williamsport. --waw
