Bessie E. Harrison, 89, a life resident of Newport, died at 4:16 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Regional Hospital, Terre Haute. She had been in ill health four years. She was born Nov. 9, 1896, in Vermillion County, the daughter of Allen and Elizabeth Agree Hayworth. She married William H. Harrison in Newport. He died Oct. 18, 1941. Besides being a homemaker, she worked at Castle Shannon Nursing Home in Rockville. She was a charter member of the Church of God in Newport. She was a Gold Star Mother and a charter member of the Newport American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving are five daughters, Elizabeth Jaynes, Theodosia, Mo.; Martha Norman, Denver; Ruth McCann, Veedersburg; Mary Sweitzer, Dubuque, Colo., and Norma Smith, Zionsville; three sons, George and James Harrison, both of Newport, and John Harrison, Denver; 32 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren, and a brother, William Haworth, Newport. She was also preceded in death by son, William H. Harrison, her parents, three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at DeVerter Brothers Funeral Home, Cayuga, with the Rev.. Jack Gambill officiating. Burial was in Thomas Cemetery in Newport.
