William F. Harris, 77, died at 6 a.m. Monday at the home of his daughter Mrs. Ferman Rice, three miles south of Mellott. He had resided with the daughter three years and suffered a paralytic stroke Aug 29, Born Feb 8, 1879, in Addington, VA the son of William and Margaret Bowers Harris, he came to Mellott as a small child with his parents. He married Ethel Rice Dec 29, 1904 and she died in April 1922. Mr. Harris had been a farmer until retirement 10 years ago and was a member of the Newtown Baptist Church. Survivors include the daughter with whom he lived; two sons, Alfred and Kenneth both Mellott area farmers; a sister, Mrs. Laura Head of Attica; two brothers, Joe of Waynetown and David of Texakana, Tex; and a half brother, Carl Harris of San Diego, Calif. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Newtown Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Johnson officiating. Burial was in Old Baptist Cemetery, northwest of Mellott with Crumley Funeral Home in charge. – kbz
