COVINGTON — Jack Dale Hankins,
80, Covington, died at 1 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2006 in VA Illiana Health Care,
where he had been a patient 18 months. He was born Nov. 21, 1925 in Attica, the
son of Harry and Vivian (Mettee) Hankins. He married Neva Joyce Holman Nov. 21,
1948 in Indianapolis. She preceded in death March 19, 1994. He was a life
resident of Fountain County, moving to Covington from Veedersburg in 1994. He
graduated from Veedersburg High School in 1944. He was a World War II Air Force
veteran. He trained and drove harness horses for 45 years. He was a member of
Christian Harness Horse Association, United States Trotting Association,
Illinois Harness Horseman's Association and a member of their Hall of Fame.
Illinois State Fair named Hankins Barn in honor of Jack and Joyce. Survivors
include: two sons, Ross (Marilyn) Hankins, Covington and Kim (Sherrie) Hankins,
Sacramento, Calif.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents and a sister. Funeral services were at noon
Thursday in Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, with Troy Harkey officiating.
Burial was in Coopers Chapel Cemetery with military honors by the V.F.W. and
American Legion. Memorials may be given to Christian Harness Horse Association,
1846 Ross Road, Sunbury, Ohio 43074 with envelopes available at the funeral
