HANCOCK, Mahlon

Source: Unknown Fountain County newspaper about Oct 25, 1936 (1930 “C” Obituary collection Fountain County Genealogy Society)

Mahlon E. Hancock, son of George and Jane Hancock, was born in Fountain County, Indiana on May 15th, 1892 and departed this life October 24th, 1936, having lived 42 years, 5 months and 9 days.  He grew to manhood in this county and was among the first Fountain county boys to enlist in the World War leaving June 6th, 1917.  After serving two years, he received an honorable discharge and was mustered out of service in May, 1919.  Soon after his return home he was united in marriage to Pearl Wilson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Wilson of Rob Roy. To this marriage eight children were born, namely, Thelma Loveta, Vera Mae, William Elwood, Betty Lou, Curtis Darwin, Ruth Anna, James Franklin and Jennie Caroline.  Mr. and Mrs. Hancock have spent most of their wedded life on a farm, the great portion of this time being not far distant from Fountain.  Mahlon has not enjoyed rugged health for the past few years, but continued to work for the support of his family until his illness became so grave that it was necessary to enter the Veterans Hospital in Danville, Illinois.  He was more recently a patient in the Veterans Hospital at Outwood, Kentucky, but finally came home to spend his last days with the family, who were so dear to him.  Had it been his choice, he no doubt would have said as did the Psalmist, “O, my God, take me not away in the midst of my years.”  The bugle has called a soldier across the “silent river unto the Captain of our Salvation.”  A soldier who voluntarily placed his life on the altar of service for his country and when stricken with disease bravely fought to regain his health.  The toilsome march of life is ended.  “Rest for the toiling hand, rest for the anxious brow, rest for the weary, wayworn feet, rest from all labor now.”
Surviving are the wife and eight children, his mother, Mrs. Jane Hancock; four sisters, Mrs. Otto Rennick, Mrs. Mike Athens, Mrs. Charles Hall, Miss Caroline Hancock; two brothers, Jeff and Wesley Hancock; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held in the Fountain Christian Church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. Charles E. Howard officiated.  Military services were rendered by members of the American Legion from Covington and Hillsboro.  Interment was made in the Riverside cemetery at Attica. - s
