Charles Franklin Hall, 70, a veteran of the Spanish-American war expired at 3 p.m., yesterday at his home, 1016 Lavette Street, where he had been ill for a year. He was born in Covington, Ind., Sept. 3, 1876, the son of the late Jeremiah and Uree McClean Hall, and lived in Fulton, Ind., until 20 years ago when he moved to Benton Harbor. From that time until April of 1937, he was employed at the local Ross Carrier Co. A fractured hip forced his retirement. In 1898 he enlisted in the United States Army and fought during the Spanish American war in Porto Rico and in the Philippine Islands. He received his discharge in 1902. He belonged to Co. K, 11th infantry. Mr. Hall was a member of the First Presbyterian church for many years and was serving as an elder at the time of his death. He was held in the highest esteem by those who knew him best. A home lover, his chief interest were his home, his children, and his grandchildren. Survivors are his widow, the former Effie Lena Ray, of Mellott, Ind., to whom he was married Dec. 22, 1904; a son, Manford M. Hall, Benton Harbor; two daughters, Mrs. Charles J. Kolar, Jr., Crown Point, Ind., and Mrs. Roger W. Spencer, Higman Park, Benton Harbor; four grandsons and three granddaughters; one brother, Mahlon B. Hall, Veedersburg, Ind.; and four sisters, Mrs. George DeHaven, Benton Harbor, Mrs. P. S. Stroupe, Lansing, Ill.; and Mrs. Bonnie McLain and Mrs. Maynard Smith, Veedersburg, Ind. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Florin funeral home with the First Presbyterian pastor, the Rev. Smith Montgomery, in charge. Burial will be in the family lot in Crystal Springs cemetery.
