Charleston, Ill June 9. William Grant, nonagenarian citizen of Coles County died about 7:30 o’clock on Thursday evening at his home in this city. He was ill about 10 days death being due to age and to complications started by a cold.   The funeral will be conducted at 9 o’clock Saturday morning in the Catholic Church in Charleston with Rev. Father JJ Connolly officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery. He was 90 years old. Mr. Grant was born April 27, 1843 in Fountain County, Indiana a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Grant. The Grant family left Indiana in July the same year in a covered wagon for Galena, Ill intending to settle in that community but turned back before reaching their destination and landed in Paradise Township, Coles County instead. The elder Grant bought 40 acres of ground in what is known as Whetstone Church vicinity southwest of Charleston. William, the son grew to manhood there. In 1868 William Grant moved to a farm in Seven Hickory township, where he continued to reside until 1910 when he moved to Charleston. He served his township a number of years as assessor and highway commissioner. He also served for a time as school director. On Feb 12, 1872, Mr. Grant married Miss Elizabeth Wall who was born in Ireland. Mr. Grant has nine living children: William O. of Marion; Fred of Mattoon; Miss Margaret; Miss Frances; JE and Joseph of Charleston; Miss Bess of Champaign and Mrs. Sophia Liebernecht of Geneseo. - kbz
