VEEDERSBURG - Mrs. Florence J. Gookins died at 12:05 p.m. Saturday at Culver Hospital where she had been a patient since July 24 and after a five-year illness. She had been a life resident of Veedersburg. Born June 11, 1875, Mrs. Gookins was the daughter of James and Sarah Eisley Songer and was married March 16, 1901 to William Gookins. Early in her life she had been a teacher in the Veedersburg area and was a member of the New Century E.U.B. Church. She was the last of a family of nine children. Surviving are her husband, two sons, Hardy and William of Newtown, two daughters, Mrs. Grace Hoagland of Veedersburg and Mrs. Mabel Davis of Covington. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the New Century E.U.B. Church with Rev. Conley Rowland officiating and burial will be in the Bonebrake Cemetery. Florence Songer Gookins, only daughter of James and Sarah Isley Songer, was born June 11, 1875, on a farm three miles southwest of Veedersburg. It was there she grew to young womanhood and attended the public school known as Dice's Corner School. She went to school at Terre Haute State Normal and Culver College preparing to be a teacher. She taught eight years at Dice's corner. Later she was united in marriage to William Gookins on March 16, 1901. They went to housekeeping on a farm nearby, and she lived all her life in the neighborhood of Veedersburg.
She was the last of nine children and she had been ill several years, being unable to walk the last year and confined to a wheelchair. On July 24, 1957, she was admitted to Culver Hospital where she passed away August 31.
An infant daughter preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband, William Gookins, and four children, Mrs. Grace Hoagland, Veedersburg, Mrs. Mabel Davis, Covington, and William and Hardy Gookins of Newtown, also, nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. -jz

Mrs. William Gookins, 72, last of a family of nine children, died about 12:05 p.m. Sat. Aug. 31, 1957, in Culver Hospital Crawfordsville, where she had been a patient five weeks. She had been in in health for about four years.
She was born June 11, 1875, near Veedersburg, daughter of James and Sarah Isley Songer. She taught rural school in this area prior to her marriage March 16, 1901, to William Gookins, who survives. They resided on Veedersburg, Rt.1.
Surviving in addition to the husband are two daughters, Mrs. Grace Hoagland of Veedersburg, and Mrs. Mabel Davis of Covington, two sons, William and Hardy Gookins, both of Newtown; nine grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
One daughter died in infancy.
She was a member of the New Century E.U.B. Church.
Funeral services were held at the New Century Church on Tuesday, with Rev. Conley Rolland officiating. Burial was in Bonebrake Cemetery. - jz
