GOODIN, Garret

On the morning of Nov. 16 at his residence one mile south of Cates the death angel entered the home and summoned the life of Garret Goodin. He was born Nov 18 1857 in the same house where he died, his age being 48 years 11 months and 28 days. For more than two years he had been afflicted with a disease that seemed to baffle the skill of the best physicians and though suffering greatly at times through these months and years, he bore it all uncomplainingly and with Christian reservation and fortitude. He always had a cheerful greeting for his family and many friends when, from time to time, called to cheer him in his affliction. He was brought up on a farm and continued to follow the same occupation all his life, and by industry and good management became one of the successful farmers of the community. On Dec 18 1882 he was united in marriage to Dela Orahood. To this union was born one son, Fred, who with his mother survive him. To his family he was ever kind and considerate, a loving and faithful husband and a kind indulgent father. His great desire being to create for those dependent upon him the greatest amount of happiness and comfort. He was a dear lover of his home and experienced his greatest enjoyment when seated around the family fireside surrounded by his family from whom he would not allow himself separated for even one day unless impelled by duty or business. As a neighbor he was kind and accommodating, always granting a favor with that heartiness of manner that at once made you feel that you were welcome and that it was a pleasure for him to accommodate you. The author of these lines has many times been the recipient of favors and accommodations and can fully testify as to his generosity. He lived a moral life. It is believed that during the first few years of his manhood he did not seriously consider the question and principals of Christianity, yet he believed in and practiced the principals of morality. Later in life he became more deeply interested in the subject of Christianity and after thorough investigation and study he became a convert to and firm believer in the New Testament. He never was united with any church organization, although he believed in them. Yet more than a year ago he experienced a change of heart that removed all doubt and enabled him to announce to those around him that everything was clear and that no shadow or cloud intervened between him and his maker, and that he felt that he was ready to meet the summons whenever it should come. This certainly is a comforting assurance to the bereaved family and friends, and should inspire us one and all to greater effort that we, like him, may be able to say when the summons comes, we are ready. ā thanks so much to āSā for her great typing
