GILLUM, Laura Drummond

Again the Reaper has been in our midst and called our dearest Laura Gillum on Friday Jan 4 at the age of 90 years, six months and 43 days. She was the oldest child of Joseph and Mary Sanders Drummond. She was born July 1, 1855 in Vermillion County near Newport, Ind. The family moved to Parke County near Howard where she spent her childhood days. She was married to David Laughlin March 12, 1876 and to this union were born three girls: Ethel, Elsie and Merle. The latter died June 29, 1899. She water later married to Butler Gillum Dec 16, 1903. They made their home in Sylvania and he preceded her in death May 15, 1921. She maintained her home in the summer in Sylvania where she could be near her much-loved friends and could tend her garden and flowers. For the past 16 years she has spent the winter months in Kingman with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Scott Marks. She had enjoyed good health until recently and had been in declining health since mid-summer especially during the last two months. Her daughter, Ethel, came to care for her the last four weeks. She was a member of the Howard Presbyterian Churchy. At one time she belonged to the Eastern Star, Pythian Sisters, Women’s Relief Corps and Welfare League. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Thompson, Long Beach, Calif; Mrs. Elsie Marks, Kingman; two stepchildren, Mrs. Chloe Gillum Jackson, Arkadelphia, Ark and Harry Gillum of Little Rock, Ark; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Brindley, San Antonio, Tex and one brother, Bruce Drummond of Banning, Calif; 7 grandchildren: Mrs. Vida Richardson, Mrs. Veda Riedman and Wade Thompson of Long Beach, Calif; Wayne Thompson of Big Bear Lake, Calif; Mrs. Velma Jones of San Bernadino, Calif; Thomas Marks of Anderson and Mrs. Laura McCoy of Tangier; 15 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. David Parent and Jimmie Vorhees, several nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. – kbz

Funeral services were held Sunday Jan 6 at the Rush Creek Church at 2 o’clock for Mrs. Laura Gillum. The Rev. Winn Sherrill officiated, assisted by the Rev. Reese. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ray with Mrs. Thurman Colson at the piano. The obituary was read by Mrs. Ella Ray. Burial was in the Ephlin cemetery near Howard. Pall bearers were Thomas Marks, Volina McCoy, John Ephlin, Leslie Gillum, William Parent and Eston Cox. Flower bearers were Mrs. Cecile Marks, Mrs. Roberta Mershon, Mrs. Lillian Parent, Miss Mildred Cox, Mrs. Barbara Voorhees, Laura, Marylin and Marjorie McCoy, Lola and Helen Miller and Audry Lewis. Those from a distance attending the funeral were Claude and Wlburn Drummond; Mrs. Lola Miller and Miss Helen Miller of Peoria, Ill; Mrs. Belle Drummond and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Lewis of Georgetown Ill; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Marks and Ann and Jimmie Davis of Anderson. - kbz
