Source: Unknown newspaper (in a booklet of obits collected by Claudine Sowers Yerkes, given to me by Betty Dotson) – hand dated 1946
The body of Charles O. Gill was found in a cabin near the Wabash River at Lodi Sunday afternoon where the young man had evidently taken his own life with a Belgian 28 souvenir gun he had brought back with him from service overseas. The Fountain County Coroner, Charles Fishero and State Officer Clarence Short were summoned about noon Sunday Mar 24 to investigate. At first it was thought the deceased might have been the victim of foul play. A private first class in the US Army, Gill had been stationed at Wright Field, Ohio. He had seen service in the European theater and had just finished a 90 day furlough after reenlisting in the army. At this time, he was home on a 3-day pass March 22 – 25. No definite cause for his act can be given. He was born Marach 17, 122 in Fountain County. His father, DeVerter Gill is a native of Parke County. His mother, Grace M. Judson has been dead for some 10 years. Surviving besides the father are the following brothers and sisters: Raymond and Thelma at home; Joe, overseas and Christ C, living at Brazil, Ind. Charles was the eldest of the five children. The body was removed to the Fishero Funeral Home and prepared for burial and later was taken to the home of Richard Bush at Lodi. Burial in Miller Cemetery at Lodi. - kbz
