Attica—Captain Robert W. Geeding, 51, United States Navy and former Attica resident, died Jan. 20, 1989 while on flight maneuvers in the Subic Bay in the Philippines.

  He was born Oct. 2, 1937 in Lafayette, the son of Virginia Milligan Geeding and the late Martin C. Geeding, Route 4, Attica.
  He was first married in August 1959 in Williamsport to Virginia Helwig. He was later married on Sept. 12, 1973 in Norfolk, Va. To Anne Elaine Knapp, who survives.

  He graduated from Attica High School in 1955 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University. He served in the Indiana National Guard and served as a sergeant in Company “D”, 151st Infantry Battalion from August 1955 to November 1960. During the Vietnam War, he was with Squadron 211 and made three WESTPAC deployments aboard the USS ORINSKANY, USS CORAL SEA, USS KITTY HAWK and the USS CONSTELLATION. In 1972, he served in the Pentagon on the OPNAV staff. Prior to his accident, Geeding had logged over 2,000 accident-free hours. He served as chief of staff, COMFAIRWESTPAC, from November 1986 to October 1987. He was presently commanding officer of the Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 50 in the Philippines. His decorations include two Meritorious Service Medals, 11 Air Medals and the Navy Commendation Medal.

  He had attended the Attica-Williamsport Presbyterian Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing, and in his later years, he enjoyed gardening.

  Surviving besides his wife are his mother, two daughters, Mrs. Garrett (Pamela) Hartsuyker and Kristina Geeding, both of San Diego, Calif.; one son, Daniel, San Diego; one stepson, Robert Ashburner, San Diego; one sister, Carolyn Geeding, Elizabeth, N. J., and one brother, Major James M., Papillion, Neb. He was preceded in death by his father on Nov. 13, 1988.

  Full military memorial services will be held in San Diego. Memorial services will be held at Maus Funeral Home, Attica, at a later date.   Following his cremation, his cremains will be scattered over the family farm. - s

Attica—U. S. Navy Captain Robert W. Geeding, 51, stationed in the Philippines, died at 1:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 1989, when his plane went down in Subic Bay, near the base, during training exercises. He served with and was commanding officer of the Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 50.
