WILLIAMSPORT — Oral V. Gayler,
83, 108 Fall St., Williamsport, died at 4:07 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2003 in St.
Vincent Williamsport Hospital. He was born July 29, 1919 in Attica, the son of
Albert Moore and Mary Eve Thayer Gayler. He married Evelyn S. Mitton Aug. 31,
1940 in Lafayette. She survives. He was raised in Attica, graduating from
Attica High School in 1937. He attended Western Illinois University in Macomb,
Ill. He was a heavy equipment operator for 23 years. He served for 16 years as
a supervisor for the Warren County Highway Department, retiring in 1986. He was
a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army Air Corps. He was a pilot
and was discharged with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was a member of the
Williamsport United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #259 of
Williamsport; life member of V.F.W. Post #3318 of Attica; and a member, a past
president and golden eagle of Attica Aerie #2596. He was an avid golfer, bowler
and billiard player. Survivors, besides the wife, include: two daughters, Sue
(Dick) Dobbels, Williamsport and Leanne Gaye. (Henry) Borkovitz, Menomonee
Falls, Wis., three sisters, Opal Rader, Attica; Vivian Trietsch, Denton, Texas
and Joy Nutter, Mesquite, N.V.; five grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leland and
Harold Gayler. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday in Maus Funeral Home,
Attica, with the Revs. Emmett Ade and Charles B. Anderson officiating. Burial
with military honors was in Riverside Cemetery, Attica. Memorial contributions may
be made to the Williamsport United Methodist Church. – jlr
