John W. Gardner, 83, a former trustee of Richland Township and a retired farmer of the vicinity of Mellott, was found dead by his wife on the back porch of their home, one half mile north of Mellott about noon Tuesday. He has been in declining health for several years, but death came unexpected.  He was born in the Murray community near Mellott on Jan 19, 1872 the son of Martin and Albina Fowler Gardner. He was first married to “Bert” Carpenter, who preceded him in death a number of years ago.  On April 8, 1909 he was married to Mae Huff.  Mr. Gardner was a member of the Mellott Congregational Christian Church and the Newtown Masonic Lodge. Survivors include the invalid widow, two sons: Emory Gardner of Crawfordsville and Benjamin Gardner of Fort Collins, Colo; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  Funeral services was held at the Mellott Congregational Christian Church at 1:30 p.m. Thursday with Rev. Guy T. Walters of Mellott officiating. The Crumley Funeral Home of Hillsboro was in charge and burial was in the Newtown Cemetery.
