EWBANK, William "Jacob" - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Jacob Ewbank, one of the old pioneers of this section, breathed his last at his home, SE of Kingman Friday March 7 at 10 a.m. after only six days illness, of stomach and bowel trouble. It was reported the first week that Mr. Ewbank was seriously ill and it came as a great surprise, as he was seen on our streets last Saturday apparently in the best of health, but was taken sick Sunday morning and failed rapidly until his death. His son, William of NC was telegraphed for and replied that he would be here as soon as possible. Mr. Ewbank would have been 72 years old.

The funeral was held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at his late home, services being conducted by Rev. JT Phillips. Interment took place at the Zackmire cemetery.

The death of Jacob Ewbank was a very unexpected event and a great surprise to all of the deceased's many friends. His death occured at his residence March 7 at 10 a.m. after a short illness of 5 days of accute inflammation of stomach and locking intestines, dying practially in full health and weight over 250 pounds. He was nearly 72 lacking only 21 days. Jacob Ewbank was one of the clean, model citizens of Kingman making his impression upon all those that he met as that of a noble, trustworthy man. He was a deacon of credit and honor in the Pleasant Grove Christian church and for 17 years under the continued administration fo pastor John T. Phillips, officiated and administred the sacred emblems. In 45 years of married life he and his good wife, Elizabeth had accumulated near 600 acres, and gave each of his six children 80 acres of its equivalent. His six children are: Zada Bonebrake, oldest daughter, her husband being President of the new Veedersburg Bank, Marshall F; Thomas C; William R; Florence A and Mada M and are in high standing as rising citizens of that community. Brother Jacob Ewbank was a bright Mason and of prominence and influence. He was made a Master Mason at Indianapolis Sept 22, 1863 and filled the honorable chair as Worshipful Master to several lodges. His funeral occurred at his late residence Sunday, March 9 at 10 a.m. Rev John T Phillips of Frankfort conducteing the sad rites of the occasion, delivering a very earnest and feeling address, assisted by the Masonic fraternity of Kingman Wallace and Yeddo. THe attendance was large and roads all but impassable there being quite a number of accidents. Jacob Ewbank will be much missed in the community, church, lodge and family.
