ATTICA — Fred H. Evans, Jr., 73, 407 N. Sixth St., Attica, died at 1:35 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002 in Country Care Nursing Center, Williamsport, following his recovery from lung surgery. He was born April 20, 1928 in Momence, Ill., the son of Fred H. and Ellen Louese Lyon Evans. He married Nancy A. Parton June 24, 1950 in Attica. She survives. He graduated from Attica High School in 1946 as salutatorian and from Butler University in the School of Pharmacy in 1950. He formerly worked for Walgreens Pharmacy in South Bend and later owned the McKinley Pharmacy in South Bend from 1953-1960. While living in South Bend he was cited by the South Bend United Way for his influence in helping with the polio inoculations of 15,465 children in the South Bend area. In 1960 he moved to Attica where he and his brother, Stanford Evans, continued the legacy of their father by continuing the operation of the Evans Pharmacy until his retirement in 1991. While living in Attica he was very active in local government and community activities. He was a member of the Indiana Pharmaceutical Association and former President of the St. Joseph County Pharmaceutical Association. He was a member of the Toastmasters Club in South Bend. He was a member of the Area Four Planning Commissioner, he served as councilman-at-large for the City of Attica from 1968-1972. He was named Citizen of the Year of Attica in 1964. He was an avid tennis player and golfer where he was a member of the Danville, Ill. Tennis Club and a member of the Harrison Hills Country Club. He loved to raise a vegetable garden and was known for raising asparagus. Survivors, besides the wife, are: a daughter, Tamara (Jack) Walker, Montgomery, Texas; a son, Barry Evans, Boise, Idaho; a granddaughter, Amy Louese Walker; and a sister, Alice (Robert Lee) Smith, Lafayette. He was preceded in death by a brother, Stanford and a sister, Sarah Pattengale. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday in Maus Funeral Home, Attica, with the Rev. Don Williams officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Attica. Memorial contributions may be made to the Danville, Ill. Tennis Club. – jlr
