ELLIS, Lewis

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal 10 March 1899 p 5

Lewis Ellis, who has been sick for some time, died Thursday, Feb 16, 1899 aged 81 years 5 months 28 days. He was born in Boone County, KY Aug 18, 1817 and moved to Dearborn County, Indiana with his parents in 1832. They lived there 5 years, then moved to Montgomery County and in 1839 moved to Fountain County and settled on part of the farm where he died. He was married to Sarah A. Pearson May 6, 1847. Since the death of his brothers, Thomas and George, which occurred two and ten years ago, he has failed rapidly in bodily vigor and rejoiced in the fact that he would soon join them on the other shore. From this time until his death, friends, neighbors and even strangers were especially kind and attentive to him. His love for his home, wife, children and grandchildren was supreme. He was a friend to everyone, big-hearted, self-sacrificing, one of nature's own noblemen. The funeral occurred Friday at 2 p.m., Rev. Cooper officiating and the remains were laid to rest in the Masonic Cemetery at Waynetown. A host of friends mourn his death, but they should rejoice that his desire so often expressed during his affliction that he might depart and be at peace has been granted, sorrowing most of all that we shall miss his counsel and see his face no more.
