Lawrence H. Ellis, 77, a retired civil engineer passed away unexpectedly in his sleep and was found Sunday morning in his bed at the home of his sister, Mrs. Emma Harper on Newlin Street with whom he made his home. He had not been ill except upon returning from downtown Saturday he had said he was short of breath but made no further complaint. Mr. Ellis was born in Thorntown, Ind son of Isaac N. and Elizabeth Allen Ellis early day residents of Veedersburg. Mr. Ellis senior brought his family here and took employment with the old woolen mills at the Coal Creek bridge south of town where there was a dam which provided water power for the mills. The son, Lawrence grew up here and then located in Kansas City, Kan where he first was employed as an engineer with the Kansas City stock yards and later with the city of Kansas City, Kan for a number of years until he retired. He came to Veedersburg to be with his sister, Mrs. Harper about two years ago. Mr. Ellis was married to Anna Whitmer in Kansas City. She preceded him in death. He and his family had been affiliated with First Church of Christ Scientist in Kansas City for many years. Surviving are one son, Charles A of Kansas City; one brother, Ora Ellis of Battle Creek, Michigan and the sister Mrs. Harper. Brief Christian Science services were held at the Fishero Funeral Home at 8 p.m., Monday with Hugh Miller as reader with final services to be held in Kansas City. – kbz
