DUNWOODY, David - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Services for David Benjamin Dunwoody, 78, of 72 17th St., will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Fisher Funeral Chapel. He died at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at his residence. Born March 15, 1923, in Dayton, Ind., he was the son of Benjamin Franklin and Della Theresa Siefers Dunwoody. On Aug. 13, 1950, in Osborn Prairie Christian Church - near Stone Bluff in Fountain County, he was married to Marvellen Nicklas of Veedersburg, who survives. Mr. Dunwoody retired from the Logansport Community School Corporation as a teacher in 1984. He graduated from Purdue University in 1944 with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. he had served at the Logansport Community School Corporation since 1957, teaching science at Lincoln Middle School. Before coming to Logansport in 1949, he started teaching in 1945 at Honey Creek and then Monroe & Harrison schools in Howard County as well as Tipton Township and Washington Township schools in Cass County, where he taught agriculture. Mr. Dunwoody was a member of the First United Methodist Church, joining in 1950. With a true gift for music, he sang solos in the church choir and enjoyed playing in the Bell Choir. For many years, it was a tradition at the church for Mr. Dunwoody to sing "That's America to Me" for the Fourth of July holiday service. He also sang for numerous weddings as well as funerals over the years. He was very active in the church, the Men's Fellowship Monday morning group, Twilighters and Metholite Sunday School class. Mr. Dunwoody also worked for 25 years at the Indianapolis 500 race track, something he enjoyed immensely. Residents at local nursing homes enjoyed his visits and conversation as he dedicated many volunteer hours following his retirement from teaching. In earlier years, as his children were growing up, he served as a 4-H leader. Also surviving are three sons, Steven David Dunwoody, Middletown, Pa., Gary Lee Dunwoody, Logansport, and Gregory Ben Dunwoody, Fort Wayne; two daughters, Theresa Arnold, Indianapolis, and Peggy Henry, Versailles, Ky.; five grandsons, Dwight Paul Dunwoody, Nicholas Dunwoody, Joshua Henry, Michael Henry and Brandon Moss; seven granddaughters, Jennifer Dunwoody, Amanda Dunwoody, Julie Arnold, Kelly Arnold, Brenda Dunwoody, Sandra Dunwoody and Erica Henry; one great-granddaughter, Clair Dunwoody; one sister, Eva Barnes and her husband William, Laguna Woods, Calif. and several nieces and nephews. One granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Dunwoody, and two sisters, Esther Garrison and Kay Pell, preceded in death. The Rev. Michael Dominick will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Ever Rest Memorial Park. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral chapel.
