WAYNETOWN– John R. Dukes, 68, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 1969) at his home seven miles southwest of Waynetown. He had been ill for six months. Born March 21, 1901, near Milford, he was the son of Jed and Media Sherrill Dukes. He was married Feb. 6, 1929 at Crawfordsville to Mabel Rogers, who survives. Mr. Dukes was a farmer and had moved to Indiana in 1927. He was a member of the Wallace Christian Church and the Modern Woodmen Lodge. He had attended school at Milford. Other survivors include a son, John R. of Victoria, Tex.; a brother, Sherrill of Watseka; a sister, Miss Edith Dukes of Stockland; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother. Services will be at 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday at the Servies-Thomas Funeral Home in Waynetown. The Rev. G. C. DeNeal will officiate. Burial will be in Bonebrake Cemetery. Waynetown – John R. Dukes, age 68, died at 2 p.m. Saturday Oct 4 at his home 7 miles south of Waynetown. Fountain County Coroner Robert B. Shelby said death was from natural causes. Mr. Dukes was born March 22, 1901 near Milford, Ill, the son of Jed and Nedia Sherrill Dukes. He was married to Mabel Rogers at Crawfordsville Feb 6, 1929. He was a member of the Wallace Christian Church and the Modern Woodmen Lodge at Milford. A farmer all his life, he was educated at Milford schools before moving to Indiana in 1927. Surviving are his wife; one son, John Riley of Victoria, Tex; one brother, Sherrill of Watseka, Ill; one sister, Miss Edith Dukes of Stockland, Ill; two granddaughters, Donna and Debra of Victoria, Tex and two nieces. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert who died in infancy. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Servies-Thomas Funeral Home in Waynetown. The Rev. GC DeNeal officiated and burial was in Bonebrake Cemetery south of Veedersburg.
