Hillsboro - Charles H. Drake, 79, died in Culver Hospital about 5 p.m. Tuesday after a long illness. He had been in the hospital a week. Prior to that time, he was in Veterans Hospital at Indianapolis for four weeks. He was a carpenter and veteran of the Spanish-American War. Mr. Drake was a member of Hillsboro Methodist Church and United Spanish War Veterans. He had lived in Hillsboro since 1916. Born Jan 1, 1879, in Greene county, he was the son of Nathanial and Permelia Drake. He was married to Mary Wooten in 1906. She preceded him in death. He was married to Nellie Hiatt, Sept 4, 1941. Survivors include the widow; a son, T/Sgt. Robert E. Drake of Shaw Air Force Base, S.C.; a daughter, Mrs Gretchen Ludlow of Hillsboro; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Methodist Church with Rev. Sheldon Garriott officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to services. Friends may call at the Crumley Funeral Home Thursday.

Charles H. Drake, 79, a resident of Hillsboro for the greater part of his life, died at Culver Hospital in Crawfordsville at 5 p.m. Tuesday after being a medical patient for a week. Prior to that he spent four weeks in the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis and has been in declining health the past few years.
Born January 1, 1879, in Green County, Indiana the son of Nathaniel and Permelia Drake On Sept. 5, 1906, he was married to Mary Wootan, who died November 5, 1940. They resided near Bloomington until 1910 when they moved to Hillsboro. On Sept. 4, 1941, he was married to Mrs. Nellie Hiatt of Indianapolis, and she survives. Other survivors are one daughter,
Mrs. Gretchen Ludlow of Hillsboro and one son: T/Sgt. Robert E, Drake of Shaw Afr Force Base, South Carolina: eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was a member of the Hillsboro Methodist Church, a veteran of the Spanish-American War and also a member of the United Spanish War Veterans. He was a carpenter by trade.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Friday) at the Hillsboro Methodist Church and the body will lie in state one hour preceding the service. The Rev. Sheldon Garriott, local pastor, will be in charge and burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hillsboro.
Friends may call at the Crumley Funeral Home on Thursday. - jz

The Hillsboro American Legion Post conducted a Military Funeral service for Charles H. Drake, taking part in the church service and at the cemetery. The local pastor, Rev. Sheldon Garriott, was in charge of the service held at the Methodist Church at 10:30 a:m. Organ music was by Mrs. Mildred Cooper and Mrs. Mildred Gray accompanied the church trio, Mrs. Lucile Parnell, Mrs. Mabel Brown and Mrs. Vera Shade, who sang, "When I Get To The End Of The Road", and 'Precious. Lord Take My Hand.
Legion Members who served as pall bearers were: John Giovanini, Fred Starnes, Archie Lighty, Jessie Smith, Alfred Burk and Jack Crane. The color guard commanded by Charles Humphreys was Paul Grimes, Sam Janeway, Carter Hutchins, and John Lowe. Clyde Jeffries commanded the firing squad, Charles Donham, Charles Shade, Paul Harshbarger and Kenney Allen.
Women of the Come Join Us Class of the Methodist Sunday School served as flower bearers & burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. - jz
