DEVENISH, Edith

Source: Covington Friend Wednesday, Dec. 14, 1977

Covington—Edith Bernice Devenish, 71, of Covington route 3, was found dead early Sunday at her home, apparently from exposure to the cold.

Her body was found about 2:30 p.m. Sunday by her sister, who resides nearby.

Robert DeVerter, Fountain County coroner, attributed death to exposure to the cold. DeVerter said she had refused to allow electricity or gas in her home for heating or cooking. He said she had heated the home with an open fireplace and although she had plenty of wood available, he believed she had not had a fire for at least three days.

DeVerter said that her sister had been in her home about 5 p.m. Saturday and tried without success to get her to start a fire. She was found lying on her bed on top of the covers.

A registered nurse in Chicago for many years, she had retired in 1968 as a nurse at the Alward Nursing Home in Attica. She was a 1925 graduate of Williamsport High. She was a member of the White City Royal Neighbors of America Camp 2827 of Attica and was a former member of the Williamsport United Methodist Church.

A resident of the Portland Arch community since 1941, she was a former resident of Williamsport and Ambia.

Born March 28, 1906, in Watseka, Ill., she was the daughter of Arthur James and Mary Etta Marquess Devenish. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Ellen Tharldson of Covington Route 3; and a niece, Mrs. Mary Virginia Roy of Keysport, Ill.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Graveside services and burial will be at 1 p.m. EST Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery in Attica.

There will be no visitation. The Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home is in charge.
