A 33 year old former Midland resident was accidentally drowned Wednesday while engaged as a timber worker in the Smith River, Reedsport, Ore. The victim was Richard Denton who was born Dec 30, 1920, in White Cloud, Mich. Mr. Denton came to Midland in 1940 and was employed at one time at the Smith Dairy. He was one of the first enlistees from this county when he joined the Coast Guard, Dec. 12, 1941. He remained in service until Jan 3, 1947. Returning to Midland, he was employed for a time at the Normal Wood Products, 1087 North Eastman road. Mr. Denton left Midland in the summer of 1948 for Oregon where he had since resided. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. John Denton (sic) of Reedsport, his father, Preston Denton, Sr., of Midland; three brothers, Preston Jr., of Tilemook, Ore., Warner and Albert Denton, both of Midland; six sisters, Mrs. Lucille Hughey, Festus, Mo., Mrs. Dorothy Heinemann, Northboork, Ill., Mrs. Lulu Stephens, Grand Rapids; Mrs. Thelma McCrary, Hope, Mrs. Mildred Andreasen and Mrs. Virginia Kaweck, both of Midland. The body is being returned to Midland Monday morning. Funeral services will be announced later. The Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
