DAY, John Hershel - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

John Herschel Day, a former resident of Jackson township, this county, and at one time a teacher of this county, died at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the home of his sister, Mrs. William E. Lewis, in Danville, Ill., aged 38. The decedent had been in failing health for two years, and eight months ago he went to the home of his sister to live. He was born at Wallace, this county, and was a son of Valentine and Sarah Morgan Day. His mother is still living on Silver Island, near Cayuga. His wife died in 1916. He leaves a daughter, Esther Lucile Day, who resides with her grandmother.

The funeral was held at the Lewis residence in Danville Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. The body was buried in the Zackmire Cemetery near Kingman.

John Herschel Day, 38, a school teacher employed in theFountain and Vermillion County, Indiana schools and last stationed at Cayuga for many years, died at 3 o'clock Sun. afternoon in Danville, at the home of his sister, Mrs. William E. Lewis, wife of the Wabash railway yard conductor, 305 E. Harrison St. He had been in failing health for the pst years, and eight months ago came to Danville, to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis. In addition to his work as teacher, Day was a musician and played in Prof. Dave Webb's band here and at Covington for a number of years and was at one time a leader of a band at Cyuga. He also was amember of Battery A, of the 149th United States field artllery for a brief period, enlisting here at the time the command at that time a state organization, was ordered to the Mexican border, and later going with them to Fort Sheridan on the first lap of their long journey overseas but was severly injured in an accident during drill at the fort that he was not accepted for overseas services. John Herschel Day was born Sept 16, 1886 at Wallace, Fountain County the son of Valentine and Sarah Morgan Day and while still in his teens moved with them to Cayuga where he had since resided. his mother is still living at Silver Island, near Cayuga. He was a widower, his wife, Mrs. Winifred Day, whome he married in 1916 passing away in 1916. There was a daughter born to this union, Esther Lucille Day, who resides with her grandmother. A brother, Thomas Day, of Cayuga and the sister, Mrs. Lillian Day Lewis of this ity are the other surviving relatives. Fun. serv. will be held at the Lewis residence at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning with Rev. Mr. Mast pastor of the Church of Christ (Cayuga) officiating. The body will be taken to the vicinity of Kingman Indiana for burial in the Zackmire Cemetery.
