DAVIS, Lotta Savage
LOTTA DAVIS
Source: Iva Lewis Obituary Scrapbook
The death of Mrs. Lotta Davis,
wife of Alva Davis, at their home in Silverwood Sunday morning, was indeed a
sad and sudden end of life and while she has been afflicted almost since
childhood, the news was a shock to that community. Both Mr. and Mrs. Davis had
attended revival meetings, which are being held in the town of Lodi, on
Saturday night remaining until after ten o’clock and she seemed to be, if any
different, in better health than usual. She was to all appearances as well as
common when they retired and arose, as is their usual custom, about 6:30
o’clock Sunday morning when she prepared her husband’s breakfast of which he
partook she not eating breakfast, as she has not done for sometime. About 8
o’clock Mr. Davis went to the swales to look after some traps he had located
there. Before leaving he asked her how she was feeling this morning and she
replied that she was all right. This was the last conversation he held with
her. He returned from the swales at 9:20 o’clock going direct to his home and
entering the kitchen, not finding his wife, he thought she had gone to her
sister’s, Mrs. Roy Rabb’s, who lives only a short distance, and he sat down for
a while on the back porch. In a short time he got up and went into the house
and was, horrified to find his wife lying on the floor with her head and
shoulders lying on a couch. He called to her and as she made no response he
took hold of her and raised her up, when to his horror he discovered that she
was dead. He lay her down on the floor and ran for her sister, Mrs. Rabb, who
reached the poor woman in a few moments and began working with her, calling for
the neighbors who had reached the home, to summons a doctor. They soon found
Dr. Darroch, of Cayuga, who was in the
town to see a patient and he hastened to the Davis home but at once realized
that Mrs. Davis was beyond the power of medical aid and told the relatives that
nothing could be done for her as her life had ended. Coroner Parham was sent
for and he found the above facts as well as that Mrs. Davis had been afflicted
of heart trouble for several years and that when only three years of age she
began having spells which later seemed to be some form of epilepsy and as she
grew older they became more severe and serious. She had them during the last
few years of her life quite often and at times when they were upon her it
seemed that she could not survive. She fully realized her serious condition but
at no time did she complain. She smiled kindly on fate and was prepared and
ready whenever it was her Master’s wish that she pass to the Great Beyond and
while death in such a manner is a sad shock, to they who loved her so well, it
has a sweet consolation in knowing that it is but an end to the darkness on
earth to awaken in the brightness of an eternal home where sickness and sorrow
are unknown. Mrs. Davis was the daughter of Uncle William Savage. She leaves no
children but she leaves husband, brothers, sisters, parents and a legion of
friends and relatives to mourn her death, for she was loved and esteemed by all
who knew her. She was 39 years of age the 24th of last February. The funeral
was held Tuesday at one o’clock. A short service was held at the home after which
the remains were taken to the Lodi cemetery and laid to rest. – jlr
