Death of John Curran (Contributed) John Curran is dead. There is no relative to mourn his loss, or to take note of his passing. He died early Sunday morning at the residence of his employer, George J. Borst, who gave to him in the several months of his acute illness, all the care and attention and devotion that might be given by any of us, to those of our own, to whom such attention was due. Johnnie Curran was an Attica character, but as such, he was, as well, an Attica citizen. His entire life time of 59 years was spent among us. He was one of us, a part of our community live and certainly his passing should not go unnoticed. Johnnie Curran, in his entire life time never harmed any man, save one, himself. His chosen companion through life was wished upon him by the author of his being, who in John’s early years brought him in close contact with John Barleycorn and as Jon Curran grew older, the friendship of the two Johns became more and more closely cemented. The sudden death of John Barleycorn was to John Curran a great shock, he however survived him by many months and the last years of his life where his most useful years. John Curran, after the death of his mother, whom every one loved and respected and to whom John was devoted, lived a precarious life. He sometimes slept out of doors, and he spent many winter nights as the guest of the city on the floor of the water and light plant, always, however, willing and voluntarily rendering service in return. John had only one fault, aside from that he was pure minded, not given to profanity and was loyal to his employers and friends. His quick mind and ready wit and keen retort were a source of joy to those with whom he came in contact. If one sought to get the better of John by some jollying remark, such a one was sure to be sorry for the attempt, for John’s quick answer was always ready and unfailing. He was very quick to detect the true from the false and his contempt for the hypocrite and pretender was supreme. To those in authority he was always respectful, and many is the apology he has made and the regret he has expressed for the trouble he caused others. The last months of his life were an inspiration to those with whom he came in contact. Knowing that death was inevitable and only a question of days, his only thought was for those about him and for the trouble he might be causing them. Although suffering intensely he was extremely patient and even in his last hours his witticisms were a source of enjoyment to those about him. Johnnie Curran is beyond the portals, he has passed the bar. He is beyond human judgment and human criticism. His faults we will write in the sands where the record will soon perish and we will remember him for his better qualities and believe that in the Future he is now facing he will find rest and peace. --- Typing thanks to dkd
