CROWLEY, Josephus - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Josephus Crowley, son of OA and Eva Newnum Crowley, was born at Steam Corner, Dec 23, 1849 and passed to the great beyond Feb 12, 1917 aged 67 Y1M 20D. Mr. Crowley came to Veedersburg in 1869 from his father's farm near Steam Corner. He and his father for many years owned and operated a woolen mill just across Coal Creek from the Old MIll or Hetfields Mill in the infancy of Veedersburg and even before its existance. In 1877 he went to Tx where he taught school among the Indians for two years. He then went across country 1000 mi. by stage to what is now Silver City, NM. Here he stettled a pioneer in that then wild country. In 1889 he was appointed judge over Grant County, which office he held the remainder of his life. He saw wild country develop into a civilized place and become a territory and finally a state. He saw its mining industry in their infancy owning and helping ot develop a large number of them. He was loved and will be greatly mourned by all who knew him. For the past few months he has been afflicted with leakage of the heart which caused his death. He leaves a widow and 5 children to mourn his loss, besides Charles Crowley of this city and a sister, Mrs. ??
