CROWDER, Sylvester - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

OAKWOOD — Sylvester E. Crowder, 82, a lifetime resident of Oakwood, died at 9:45 a.m. Friday (Oct. 17, 1969) at his residence on Harrison Street. He had been in ill health 17 year. Mr. Crowder was born Nov. 18, 1886, in Yeddo, Ind., a son of Eli and Hannah Kerr Crowder. He married Mary Ellen Sims on July 18, 1919, in Danville, and she survives. Mr. Crowder was employed as a blacksmith with the Electric Coal Co. for several years, was later employed for 17 years by the Advance Industrial Supply Co. of Danville, and owned his own blacksmith shop in Oakwood. He served with the Army in France during World War I and was a member of Oakwood American Legion Post 610 and the United Mine Workers. He attended the United Brethren Church of Hillery. Besides the widow, Mr. Crowder is survived by one son, Donald W. of Oakwood; two daughters, Mrs. Merle (Frances) Miller of Danville, Mrs. Byron (Louise) Cole of Sidney; two sisters, Mrs. Nora Owens of Rossville, Mrs. Goldie Cole of Oakwood; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sons, George E. and Harold E., who were lost at sea in the Atlantic on Dec. 11, 1942, while serving with the Navy during World War II. Arrangements are incomplete at the Johnson Funeral Home in Oakwood. --waw
