CROWDER, Eaustin "Joker"

  Eaustin “Joker” Crowder, 72, of Cates, a retired coal miner, was dead on arrival from an apparent heart attack at 11 a.m. Friday, June 22, 1979, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill.

  He was a resident of fountain County and Cates all his life and was a member of the United Mine Workers of Evansville, the Kingman Lodge of the Modern Woodman of America and was a World War II veteran.

  Born in Fountain County Jan. 13, 1907, he was the son of Amos and Maude Catherine Witsman Crowder. On Sept. 24, 1929 he married Mary Elizabeth Barker, who survives.

  Other survivors include two sons, Leo Dale Crowder and Samuel Dee Crowder, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Sample of Cisco, Ill., and Mrs. Shirley Ann McMasters of Cates; three brothers, Ora of Veedersburg, Ind., Keith of DeKalb, Ill., and Amos Jr. of Baroda, Mich.; three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Boehm of Indianapolis, Mrs. Vera Brooks of Benton Harbor, Mich. and Mrs. Roberta Nieman of Danville; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, a grandson, a sister and two brothers.

  Services were held Tuesday at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington with the Rev. Alfred Dobbs officiating. Burial was in Cooper’s Cemetery, southeast of Covington. – thanks to S
