Cates – Chancey William Crowder, age 55, a life resident of the Cates community died at 3:45 a.m. Sunday Dec 22 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill. He had been a patient there 12 days. Mr. Crowder was born March 14, 1913 in Fountain County, the son of Amos and Maude Witsman Crowder. He was married Aug 22, 1935 to Ruth Barker who survives. He had been a mechanic and blacksmith, operating his own shop. He was a member of the Yeddo Masonic Lodge 636. Surviving in addition to the wife are his parents of Veedersburg Rt 2; one son, Chancey Jr. of Cates; four brothers, Eustin and Ora, both of Veedersburg Rt 2, Keith of DeKalb and Amos Jr of Baroda, Mich; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Hacker and Mrs. Vera B rooks, both of Benton Harbor, Mich; Mrs. Catherine Bohen of Beach Grove and Mrs. Roberta Nieman of Danville and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl. Funeral services was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington. The Rev. Lucille Esbenshade officiated and burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Masonic services were held at the funeral home Monday night. – kbz

Chancey W. Crowder, 55, life long resident of the Cates area, died at 3:45 a.m. Sunday, December 20 1968, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill., where he had been a patient for 12 days. Born March 14 1913 in Fountain County, he was a son of Amos and Maude Witsman Crowder. He was married to Ruth Barker Aug 22 1935. A blacksmith and mechanic, Mr. Crowder was a member of Yeddo Lodge No. 636 of F&AM. Surviving besides the widow are his parents of near Veedersburg; a son Chauncey of Cates; three grandchildren; four brothers, Eustin and Ora of near Veedersburg, Keith of DeKalb, Ill., and Amos Jr. of Baroda, Mich; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Hacker and Mrs. Vera Brooks of Benton harbor, Mich., Katherine Bohen of Beech Grove and Mrs. Roberta Nieman of Danville, Ill. and nieces and nephews. A brother, Earl, preceded him in death. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home in Covington with Rev. Lucille Esbenshade officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Masonic Memorial services were held at 8 p.m. Monday evening. kbz
