CRANE, Eliza Jane "Jennie" Beaver - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Mrs. Jennie "Aunt Jen" Crane, 95 of Hillsboro, mother of Dr. George Crane, syndicated newspaper columnist, died Monday evening (Feb. 25, 1974) at her home. She had been ill for several years. She was born Feb. 27, 1878, at Hillsboro, the daughter of John and Rebecca Shoemaker Beaver. She was married June 27, 1900, to George Washington Crane II, who died Oct. 18, 1960. She resided in Covington for several years and attended Covington School and was a graduate of Hillsboro High. She attended Covington Teachers College before going on to Valparaiso and then to Indiana State University in Terre Haute. She got her teaching license when she was 15 and taught for several years. After she was married, she and her husband moved to Chicago where she served as the first president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the Sky Scraper United Methodist Church. They moved back to Covington in 1904 and after that they moved to Fort Wayne where they resided for 20 years. While in Fort Wayne, she was superintendent of the Allen County Detention Home for Girls, was district president of the Parent-Teacher Association. She returned to Hillsboro several years ago. She was a member of the Hillsboro United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Mrs. Crane could quote the Bioble which she read every day and could offer a prayer or make an appropriate talk at church gatherings. In addition to Dr. Crane, survivors include another son, Dr. John B. Crane of Mt. Pleasant, IA; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Palmer of Gary and Mrs. Elizabeth Wolverton of Vancouver, British Columbia; a brother, Victor Beaver of Hillsboro and 14 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Crumley Williams Funeral Home, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Wednesday. --tch
