COX, William H. - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

May 23 - William H Cox well known citizen of this city and for many years a practicing attorney died at his home on 4th street. He had been in ill health the past year and his death was due to stomach trouble and a complication of diseases. Mr. Cox was born in Fountain in Shawnee Township on  March 21, 1840 . At the time it was a flourishing town and a rival to both Covington and Attica. He attended the common schools and took an advantage of all the opportunities that were afforded him to acquire an education. He commenced teaching in the public schools in 1862.  He was a soldier in the Civil War and enlisted as a volunteer in Co H 154th Reg and served until the close of the war. He studied law in the office of Milford & Rice in Attica and in the office of Judge James McCabe in Williamsport until 1868 when he was admitted to the Fountain County bar and formed a partnership with JW Cooper and later one with Hiram H Stilwell. He served six years as prosecuting attorney and was city attorney several years. In politics Mr. Cox was a Republican and gentleman of well cultivated mind, pleasing address and much respected as a citizen. He was married to Miss Mary E. Bar November 12, 1859 and to them were born 7 children 3 of whom are living, two daughters and one son. Mrs. Cox died June 6, 1874 and May 15, 1897 Mr. Cox again married Ella K. Morris of Williamsport who survives. The funeral will be held from the Cox home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. EW Streaker pastor of the ME Church officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope.
