Lee R. Cord, 53, Union Township assessor, died at 8:55 a.m. Monday at Culver Hospital where he had been a patient for two weeks. The family lives at 1214 E. Main St. Mr. Cord was elected to the office in the November, 1966, general election and took office Jan. 1, 1967. Prior to the (that) time, he had been serving as a city councilman and had long been active in Republican politics. For six years Cord was the real estate appraiser for the Kansas City Life Insurance Co. and also was a real estate broker. Previously he had been employed by the State Highway Commission. He also was an automobile salesman at one time. The vacancy created by the death of Mr. Cord must be filled, according to law, by County Assessor Otis V. Thayer within the next 10 days. The appointment is then subject to approval by the State Board of Tax Commissioners. Born July 5, 1914, near Waynetown, he was the son of Curry Smith and Nancy Lee Cord. He was a graduate of Waynetown High School. His marriage to Hazel E. Welsh took place Aug. 6, 1936, and the couple had made their home in Crawfordsville since that time. During World War II, Cord served for five years with the U.S. Army as a member of the 38th Division. He was a member of the American Legion and of the Pleasant View Baptist Church. The survivors include the wife; a son, Lee Cord Jr., a student at Purdue; three daughters, Karen L. Cord, student at Indiana State University, and Mrs. John Stipe and Mrs. David Bond, both of Indianapolis; a sister, Mrs. Hubert Cowan of near Crawfordsville; three brothers, Delmar and Leonard Cord of Crawfordsville and Dick Cord of Waynetown, and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Merrell Cord. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Pleasant View Baptist Church, with Rev. Paul Hubble in charge. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Bright Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Culver Hospital. - kbz

Funeral services for Lee R. Cord were held Wednesday morning at the Pleasant View Baptist Church. Rev. Paul Hubble, pastor of the church, officiated. Serving as pallbearers and assisting with the floral tributes were Everett Brown of Ladoga, mmward (Howard?) Slavens, David H. Cochran, John D. Holt, Paul R. Jackson and Clarence Rose. Donald K. Gravit sang "Home Sweet Home." He was accompanied by Miss Bonnie Rose at the organ. Burial was in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Mr. Cord, Union Township assessor, died Monday in Culver Hospital.- kbz
