COOPER, Harry P.

Cooper, 71, former resident of Hillsboro and widely known in Mutual Insurance circles throughout the nation, died at 10:30 Wednesday night at his home of Fall Creek Parkway, Indianapolis after several months illness. He suffered a stroke of paralysis several days ago. He was the son of Miles and Lillie Cooper and was born on a farm near Hillsboro Dec 15, 1875 his father having died on April 1 of this year at the age of 96 years. He was one of a family of 11 children. Mr. Cooper was married to Miss Josephine Long of Hillsboro who survived with their two sons, Harry P. Cooper Jr and Earl Cooper, both of Indianapolis who are both associated with the insurance companies. Mr. Cooper became interested in Mutual Insurance in his early business career. He was first associated with a Mutual Fire Insurance company which operated in Fountain and Montgomery counties. Becoming secretary of the company, he resided in Crawfordsville many years until his removal to Indianapolis in 1923 (?). He was associated with three mutual companies all of which he was instrumental in organizing. They were the Indiana Farmers Mutual, Indiana Union Mutual and Farmers Mutual Liability Company. Prominent nationally in Mutual Insurance Circles and had served for many years as Secretary of the National Association of Mutual Insurance companies and was recently succeeded by his Harry P. Cooper, Jr. He held membership in the Masonic Lodge, the Knight of Pythias , the Columbia Club and the University Park Christian Church in Indianapolis. ~~~transcribed by kbz

Cooper both of Hillsboro and four sisters: Mrs. Ida Walker of O__ Ill; and Miss Mary Cooper, a returned missionary in Africa now at home on a year’s leave of absence.
