WARD, Ira - Goes to State School

Source: Lafayette Journal Fri Nov 17, 1911 p 8

Suit has been filed in the circuit court at Covington to compel John Ward of this city to send his son Ira to school.  Ira is an unusually bright lad who is well liked by all who know him.  He can neither hear nor talk so his only chance for an education is to be sent to the state school for the deaf and dumb at Indianapolis.  He was sent to the school last year and seemed to take much interest in his work.  The superintendent of the school wrote to Mr. Ward, Ira’s father and asked that he be returned to the institution at the close of the vacation.  Ira for some reason did not go back to school and Richard Johnson, the superintendent wrote to the truant officer, Hamilton Myers asking him to see that the boy be returned.  Mr. Myers wrote Mr. Ward and called on him personally but the father refused to permit the boy to return and will fight the case.  Later, Mr. Ward consented to let Ira go back to the school and John L. Weber took him over to Indianapolis on Tuesday morning.   --kbz
