Covington, Feb 6 – William H. Ramsey, former Fountain County Treasurer was arrested today on a grand jury indictment charging embezzlement of $4,814.12 of county funds. Ramsey provided $1000 bond for his release pending arraignment. The indictment was returned yesterday after the grand jury completed an investigation based on a report made by state board of accounts field examiners. Ramsey, a Republican, began a second term as treasurer last January 1. He resigned Jan 6. He had formerly served as sheriff. Clarence E……… Ruston, chief examiner of the accounts board, said Ramsey told examiners who reported a shortage in his accounts that he “didn’t know what happened to the money.” “I am not guilty; the books balance but the money isn’t there,” he was quoted as saying. After Ramsey’s resignation, the commissioners appointed his wife to succeed him but she was unable to provide the required bond, Jack Kay of Covington was Republican.
