Burglaries in Fountain County

Attica, April 22 – Five young Attica men are in the Fountain County jail at Covington today in connection with a series of local burglaries.  Four young men have confessed, according to police, clearing up a number of crimes, while the fith denies any guilt.  Further arrests are indicated. William Hutson and Ralph Beaver both of this city were arrested in South Bend by state police and brought here Monday night.  Accused of breaking into the desk of Clyde Shupper, local newspaper circulation manager late Saturday night and stealing a sum of money they were questioned by Sheriff Frank Youngblood, City Police Chester Cooper and Clarence DeBord, state police and Shuppert.  Hutson is said to have signed a confession, naming Beaver as his accomplice.  Beaver denied any part in the burglary although he accompanied Hutson to South Bend.  Hutson was questioned regarding an attempt to break into the same office on the night of March 22, but contended this act was committed by Edward Allhands, another local youth.  DeBord arrested the latter at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Plez Allhands.  According to the officers,   Allhands admitted attempting to break open the safe in the Shuppert office and also that he entered the Max Newmark department store last fall and stole quite  a sum of money from the safe.  Allhands implicated George Idle and Donald Barfelt both of this city who enrolled in the CCC Camp at the Shades several weeks ago.  DeBord with Sheriff Youngblood and State Trooper Lee Miles went to the camp yesterday arrested Idle and Barfelt and took them to jail in Covington where Hutson, Allhands and Beaver were also taken .  Last night DeBord, Cooper, the sheriff and Mayor Charles A. Eviston questioned Allhands, Idle and Barfelt and they are said to have admitted the Newmark job as well as the burglary of the Worthing filling state last Christmas eve and of the Druley filling station last fall.  The youths also indicated they committed other crimed and implicated others, promising further arrests; the trip will be questioned more in a day or two.
