William Yount, merchant, Harveysburg, is a son of Rudolph & Susan Williams Yount, both natives of Germany. They settled in NC and d. there he when Wm. was 8 years old and she in 3 years afterward. Wm was then raised by his grandmother and an uncle, being bound out till 21. He worked his time out and on June 7, 1834 married Rebecca Sowers, daughter of Valentine & Mary. She was b. in Davidson Co NC Oct 12, 1813. Mr. Yount farmed in NC and in 1839 moved to Fountain County and settled near Jacksonville where he rented for sev years. He afterward bout 40 acre.sold then rented in Parke Co till 1851 and then engaged in sawmilling and woolcarding at which he had worked somewhat in his boyhood days. He followed this for 6 years being very successful. he built a 1200 store building in Jacksonville and embarked in busines but met with reverses and in 1858 moved to Harveysburg. He bought the Harvey steam mill of Murphey Lewis et al which he controlled till 1865 He then sold and removed to Hatfield's mills in which he worked 5 years as a day laborer. having been a faithful workman, his employer, a solid Democrat proposed to secure his nomination for co. recorder which he did and Mr. Y was elected on the Dem ticket - filled this office 8 years. Upon retiring he was elected councilman in Covington. He has been many times inspector of elections and was J. P. four years in Harveysburg. He cast his first vote for VanBuren and has stood by the democracy ever since. Jan 29, 1879, Mr. Yount lost his wife. She left 8 children, 3 girls & 5 boys. Three of the boys,Ma tthias B; William F and Obediah L served in the Civil War; all returned. Mr. Yount was next marr in the latter part of 1879 to Mary G McIntyre. She was b in Ohio; her father came Scotland and served in the war of 1812; her mother from England when 10. Mr Yount is a member of the Christian Church and a mason. He is now eng. in the hardware trade at Harveysburg
