H. Yerkes, Fairmount, farmer and stock raiser was born in Warren Co, Ohio, on 7 May 1840. His parents were natives of PA who came to Ohio in an early day. They went to Fountain Co Indiana where he, Jacob Yerkes, died in 1866. His wife (Ann) now resides in Indiana. Mr. Yerkes, the subject of this sketch, took an active part in the late war, enlisint in August 1862 in Co H 63rd Ind Vol. Inf and served until the close of the war. He was in the following battles: Resaca, Burnt Hickory, Peachtree Creek, Kenesaw Mountain, the engagements around Atlanta, Jonesboro, Spring Hill, Franklin, Nashville, Tenn, Wilmington, Goldsboro and other minor engagements. He was mustered out July 1865 and came to Vermilion Co. Mr. Yerkes has been twice married first on 21 Sept 1865 to Miss Hester E. Prevo who was born in 1839 in Fountain Co In and died 7 Sept 1877. Mr. Yerkes was married in 1878 to Miss Mary O. Noble, also a native of Indiana born in 1860. Mr. Yerkes has six children by his former wife: Spencer G; Alice M; Ella M; Annie L; Susie and Hattie. He served as township supervisor 5 years. He is a staunch republican and he and his wife are members of the ME Church.
