SOWERS, Eugene Bernard

Eugene Bernard Sowers was born in Jackson Twp in 1918, the son of Leo B and Ruby Elanore (Sheler) Sowers and grandson of Samuel Henry and Minnie O (Grimes) Sowers and Charles Manson and Miranda (Leonard) Shuler.  He is a descendant of the Jackson Twp pioneer families, has lived his entire life in the township and now resides just northeast of Wallace.  Gene was married to Gladys Louise Newnum who was born in Parke County in 1921 the daughter of Milford and Ida (Algood) Newnum of Steam Corner.  Her grandparents were Edward and Viola (Redenbaugh) Newnum of Steam Corner and James and Franney (Shoaf) Algood of Veedersburg.  The ancestors of her Newnum and Redenbaugh families were from Pennsylvania.  Eugene and Gladys both graduated from Wallace High School and are members of the Wallace Christian Church; Eugene being a church trustee and Sunday School superintendent and Gladys being president of the Ladies Aide..  Eugene worked for RR Donnelley & Sons of Crawfordsville and is now retired.  For about 10 years he has been a member of the Musicians Union and he plays the guitar and banjo.  Since retiring he spends a lot of time in his wood working shop making or repairing furniture or he is off with his fishing pole.  Both he and Gladys enjoy gardening.  There are four children in the family.  Son Edward is married to Margaret, daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Hundley) Sayre of Huntington, W Virginia.  They have to children, William Eugene and Jodi Louise and reside in Monrovia west of Indianapolis.  Edward received BS degree from Wabash College and his MS and Ph.D. in chemistry from Tufts University in Summerville, Massachusetts.  He is employed at Riley Tarr Chemical Co in Indianapolis.  Margaret received her MS degree in languages at Jackson College an affiliate of Tufts.
Daughter Carolyn is married to Charles the son of Lester and Lolus Schiehuser of Columbus, Indiana. They have two sons, Gregory Scott and Todd Charles and live in Lafayette where Carolyn is employed as an Administrative Dietician at St. Elizabeth Hospital.  She received her BS degree in education and MS degree in dietetics from Purdue University.
Son James is employed at RR Donnelley & Sons and daughter Christine is employed at the Hillsboro State Bank.  She received a graduate certificate from Indiana College of Business Technology (now Clark’s College) in Indianapolis.   ---transcribed by kbz
