James SONGER, farmer, Veedersburg, was born January 9, 1828 in VanBuren Township, and is the son of Adam and Mary Songer, who settled in this township in 1825 with its first settlers. The former was a soldier in the war of 1812. In 1826 he entered land in VanBuren Twp. and made his home in the wild forest but recently quitted by savage men, where he died in 1861, aged 67; his wife in 1834. James Songer's paternal grandparents were of Dutch descent; his maternal grandfather James Keeling was from England. James S. was educated in the pioneer schools of Fountain County. In 1862 he was married to Sarah J. Isley, daughter ofSolomon and Jane Isley, both of whom were natives of NC. She is a native of Fountain County. By this alliance he has 7 children: James, Walsey; Arthur; Hardy; Julian; Manfred and Florence J. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity at Veedersburg, Lodge No. 491 and is present secretary.
