SHAFF, Joseph

As will be seen by reference to the announcements, Mr.
Joseph Shaff of Cloverdale, this week announces that he will ask the Republican
County Convention to nominate him for the office of Sheriff. Mr. Shaff settled in Caneyville township in
1870 and has resided there continuously ever since and is one of the best known
and most highly respected citizens of Chautauqua County and was born in
Fountain County, Indiana. In 1858 he
moved with his father to northeast Missouri and cast his first vote there in
1860 for Abraham Lincoln. When the war came Joe fought rebel bushwhackers in
Missouri for a year and then returned to his old home in Indiana and enlisted
in Co H of the 63rd Indiana Infantry and served with his company as
a sergeant till the close of the war, going with Sherman to Atlanta with Pap
Thomas back to Franklin and Nashville, then with Schofield down on the coast of
North Carolina joining Sherman again at Goldsborough and was mustered out July
3, 1865. Mr. Shaff is an active, wide awake Republican and is endowed with all
the qualifications necessary for a first class sheriff and should he be nominated
and elected he will be an officer of whom every citizen will be proud. If he does not receive the nomination he will
accept the situation and work for the election of the entire Republican ticket.
