Ind Jan 12 – Paul Fortmeyer of Ft. Wayne, aged 17 is the Boy Corn King of
Indiana. This junior champion made the best showing of any boy corn grower in
the state and last night at the farmers ‘ short course at Purdue he was
suitably rewarded. In addition to receiving a trophy he will make a trip to
Washington to visit President Wilson and spend a week sightseeing, the trip
being financed by the Indiana State Board of Agriculture. There will be 12 in
the Washington party, including the boy winners in other districts of the
state, boys’ pig club winners, girls’ club work winners and county winners in
various contests conducted by the boys’ and girls’ club department of the
Purdue agriculture extension department under the direction of Prof. ZM Smith –
Young Fortmeyer, the boy corn champion grew 102.9 bushels of corn on his acre,
the cost of a bushel being 13 cents. His sample ten ears from the acre scored
68.9 and his composition telling how he did it was graded 95 per cent. In
District No 2, Raymond Rodney, aged 15 of Clinton County was the winner –
raised 101.8 bushels, cost 13 cents. His
10 ears scored 67.1 and composition 93 per cent. In the third district, Mac Reed, aged 16 of
Fountain County was the winner. His yield scored 66.4 and his composition 95

Jr. Corn Growers Elect President – Announcement of the awards was made at a general meeting of the boys and girls last night. Nearly 500 of the junior farmers and homemakers attended the short course this year, a record breaking number. At a meeting of the Junior Indiana Corn Growers’ Association last night, Mac Reed of Fountain County was elected president. The boys by birtue of their membership in the junior association are made members of the Indiana Corn Growers’ Association.
